I sat next to this dude on my Honolulu-Sydney flight and I would have woken him up at least 10 times to get to the toilet. We chewed the fat a little and he’s really cool so I’ll be checking out his gig at The Basement tonight. Turns out he is kind of a really big deal on the root/jazz/blues scene…

Me gusta tocar la guitarra
Me gusta cantar el sol
Mariachi me acompana
Quando canto mi cancion
Me gusta tomar mis copas
Aguardiente es lo mejor
Tambien el tequilla blanco
Con su sal le da sabor
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay mi amor
Ay mi morena,
De mi corazon
Well, guess who got home from the airport and found a present wrapped in shiny black paper and gold ribbon on the kitchen counter?
Yours truly is now superfluously kitted out with a brand-spanking new, iPad 2 (that makes a rather pleasing rhyme too), the first delivery in North Sydney according to the courier. I downloaded Garageband for a paltry US$5.99 (in comparison to the utterly useless James Halliday Wine Companion for AUS$9.99) and now all my iPhone apps are also loaded and come up in this peculiarly iPhone-sized format in the middle of the screen.
Yours truly wishes to thank the significant other for such an absurdly generous gift. (“Are you breaking up with me?!” may have been one of my repsonses.) Getting presents in my absence is something I could get used to.

I woke up this morning and this is what I looked like. Now I have Lovecats as an interminable ritournelle going round and round in my head.

So he was no Fats Waller but Gwilym Simcock is pretty all right on the piano. We saw him play at the Sound Lounge, organised by SIMA. The very dexterous and earnest fellow shared his birthday cake with the audience (a black forest cake covered in cream, for those interested). Happy 30th birthday Gwilym! At this tender age, a veritable jazz-impro-digy.
