    ants in your pants

My laptop is infested. INFESTED! Not with the kind of bugs that plague computers running Windows Vista but real, live ants.

    Rewind to several days ago…

The discovery of some syrupy coagulated substance jamming the top right-hand-side of my spacebar, evidenced in this IM -

Ginger and lemon tea for the rainy weather.

    too old for this

At work, slightly hungover, salami sandwich for breakfast, ringing in my ears. Now I want a muffin, a big Grumpy Baker blueberry muffin…. Why didn’t I take the train this morning?

    cake in the morning

Someone gave me two little pieces of cake, witha crumbling shortbread texture, covered in icing sugar with a candied nuts inside- one pistachio, the other was filled with walnuts I think. They were so good. I despaired for having eaten them so fast and wondered how I will ever taste such manna from heaven again. Until I turned over the little wax paper wrapper (okay, I was licking the remaining icing sugar off it… okay I had already licked off the icing sugar I was just sucking the wrapper) and found it came from “Al Sultan Pastry, 24 Walz Street Rockdale” which incidentally was firebombed last year! Who would do that?! A cake shop that good!

That goes to show, there’s no justice in the world.

Now I have to go and sample Angelina’s Rice Bubble slice.

    eat yourself well

1 x bottle Kopparberg pear cider with 2 x Codral: 1 x glass Rosabrook Margaret River Shiraz 2005; confit du canard with potato and beetroot gratin & shoulder of lamb and gnocchi with bread (Drink Better Wine); 1 x kourambiedes

    Kopparberg Ciders

Holy smokes. 1.5 glasses of Mandala 2006 Chardonnay. Maybe a kilo of cabanossi and cheese sticks. Broccoli, cauliflower and Jatz smothered in French onion dip. Starvedog Lane Vintage Pinot Noir Chardonnay Pinot Meunier 2003- (three quarters of the a bottle?) Double scoop of sticky rice and rose lychee gelato in a cone. Glass of Campari over ice. Scotch over ice. Then more scotch- an indeterminate amount of Bailie Nicol Jarvie Blended Scotch Whisky over more ice. How much I consumed, I’ll never know. The remainder was poured down the sink as a preventative measure after I passed out. Judging by my fragile state this morning, maybe more than I care to remember.

2 bowls of muesli with a banana and skim milk; soy flat white; Jago’s sublime rockmelon-less, honeydew melon-less fruit salad; olive and rosemary dinner roll; demi-light sourdough baguette with butter; half a Hummingbird cake; cookies and cream gelato from Gelatomassi supplemented by some of Paul’s chocolate

I got waylaid on my way to the Stanton Library by some markets. I was plied with all manner of bread from the stallholder of Brasserie Breads and ended up being talked into buying a partly crushed baguette for $1, which was really very tasty. It resembled and was almost as good as ‘a l’ancienne’ that I used to eat by the crate-load in Paris, except that it had half organic sourdough yeast, making it a little chewier and more flavoured than I prefer. So far, so good today, I haven’t eaten too much yet.

Darling Park Pinot Gris 2008 x 2 glasses

In terms of ridiculous restaurant requests, I didn’t think I could top my special fruit salad order, that is, until I asked if I could eat the bread I had bought at the markets with lunch at the restaurant. The waitress brought me some butter and a butter knife. It just goes to show- ask and you shall have.

la vie est une fête (de temps en temps)

White miso soup with enoki mushrooms; Delicado - Garlic Prawns, Bacalao croquette, alioli (solamente la croqueta!); Chicken, sobrasada, mushroom, corn ragout with brandy jus; Zucchini flower, queso di Cabra, butternut pumpkin, romesco sauce; some of someone else’s Serrano ham; Churros con Chocolate, Dulce de leche (extra mouthful of chocolate and dulce- can’t let that go to waste); Ricotta and berry tart with cream.

    • Yarra Burn Premium Cuvee x 2 glasses

    • Mandala Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon 2009 Margaret River x 1 glass

    • Adegas Valmiñor, Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain x 1.5 glasses

Mental note to self - exercise, exercise this weekend.
